ENERGY AND MOVEMENT
2007 – 2009
In
our modern and pacified societies, we reject any form of violence or combat. In
Europe, it’s been a long time since there had been war in our territories. The
combats are taking place elsewhere, far away, too far for people to realize it.
The civil society wants security at any price, comfort and well-being. No one
wants to be disturbed by troubles or conflicts. And yet violence and fighting
are everywhere; in Africa, Asia, or the Middle East, in the suburbs and the streets
of American and European cities. Even in the wealthiest families, we find it in
their hobbies: video games, movies and of course, sports.
In
the framework of my research on the war and the various forms of combat in our
societies, I got interested in martial arts and combat sports in Europe. I have
read and studied the philosophies behind it. I myself have practiced martial
arts and attended many courses and competitions. For many hours, I have watched
the movements and energy to translate it into drawing. The idea was to see how
the movements in martial arts would influence the movements of drawing and my relation
to the representation of movement and violence inherent in any form of combat.
The result is several notebooks filled with notes and a series of over 300
sketches and drawings executed in pencil, charcoal, pen or pastel. Through the fast
strokes, one perceives the anatomy and the movement of fighters, the visible
actors of a permitted violence.
